Moleculix Junior

Moleculix Junior is an application allowing anyone building and interacting with small (organic) molecules.
The program has currently only been tested on the Microsoft Windows desktop.

Features

  • Interactively build simple molecules
  • Learn the valence structure of different elements
  • Practice spatial abilities by rotating molecular structures around individual chemical bonds and in 3D space
  • Learn why some molecules have bent structures (H2O) and some are straight (CO2)

  • Brief help for using and installing the preview

It should be said that this preview is for you who are willing to do some testing of software in development, i.e. somewhat premature stuff.
Find below a short list of what you can do, and not do with the preview.

Help and info list for the Preview

  • Install the program by clicking on the setup program that you can download from this page. Click on the blue button below to download the setup program.
  • After you have installed the program, a simple screen should appear, similar to the image above
  • Add atoms by clicking on the buttons at the bottom of the application
  • Atoms are placed randomly in a three dimensional (3D) space
  • Move atoms in space by (left) clicking on them and simply move them around by the mouse
  • Clicking in an empty space, and moving around the mouse, causes the Camera view to change.
  • Repeatedly changing the camera angle, and moving an atom with the mouse, allow an effective movement of an atom in the depth dimension in space.
  • Small red spheres next to an atom indicate free valence electrons, available to form bonds with other atoms
  • Small blue spheres next to an atom indicate lone valence electron pairs
  • When an atom is in bond vicinity of another atom, a visual indicator is shown, allowing you to create a bond (blue indicator), or a double bond (red indicator). The bond will be created if the indicator is visible and you release the atom
  • If you click on a single chemical bond, a slide bar becomes visible, allowing you to rotate the structure about the bond
  • You can reset the camera (zoom) by clicking on the screen by the right mouse button
  • Clear the work area by clicking on the “Clear” button

  • Preview Limitations

This version of Moleculix Junior is a preview. As such, many features are disabled and certain limitations are present. Below is a list of disabled features and limitations.
  • The embedded database containing molecular structures are disabled
  • Saving your model to the database, and or file, is disabled
  • The periodic system is disabled
  • Kinetic motion of electrons, atoms and molecules are disabled
  • The help system is disabled
  • Deletion of bonds, by mouse double click, is not working properly
  • The preview will stop working on May 1st 2015
